Murtala Muhammed International Airport

Murtala Muhammed International Airport, or LOS to the IATA and DNMM to the ICAO, is an international airport in Lagos State and is the primary airport serving the entire state. It is the hub for Air Peace, Nigeria's largest airline, and other Nigerian airlines, including Aero Contractors and Arik Air. In 2021, there were 5,689 234 passengers served. There are two runways: 18R/36L, which is 12,794 (asphalt); and18L/36R, which is 8,999 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

LOS originated as Lagos International Airport during WWII, and in 1947 the West African Corporation was formed, with its main base at Ikeja. Initially, De Havilland Doves operated, servicing internal Nigerian routes, with Douglas Dakotas added to the fleet in 1957. During the 1970s, a new international terminal was constructed (modeled after Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam), at which point the airport was renamed after former Nigerian military head of state Murtala Muhammed. The new terminal opened on March 15th, 1979. Unfortunately, from the late 1980s to 2000, the international terminal was considered dangerous. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) posted signs in all US international airports warning passengers that the airport in Lagos did not meet minimum ICAO standards.
Moreover, from 1993 air service between Lagos and the US was suspended. In 1999, Olusegun Obasanjo was elected, which brought about drastic improvements at the airport. This included beefed-up security to prevent robberies and harassment, with both the inside of the terminal and the arrival areas outside secured by Airport Police. In response, the FAA ended its suspension of direct flights to Nigeria.
Moreover, by 2010 the airport had received the FAA’s highest safety rating, as the airport served over 6 million passengers that year. On September 6th, 2012, the Nigerian Minister of Aviation announced the acquisition of financing for five new international terminals in the country, including one at LOS. Construction commenced in 2013, and the new international terminal, capable of servicing 14 million annual passengers, was inaugurated on March 22nd, 2022.
