Luxembourg Airport
Luxembourg Airport, or LUX to the IATA and ELLX to the ICAO, is the main airport in Luxembourg. It is a major cargo airport, and is the fifth-busiest in Europe for this purpose. As such, it is a hub for LuxAir, Cargolux, Air China Cargo, and Qatar Airways Cargo. In 2019, there were 4.4 million passengers served. There is one runway: 06/24, which is 13,130 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
LUX originated in the 1930s as “Sandweiler Airport.” Initially, it was a small grass airfield with a 3,400-foot runway. Despite Luxembourg’s neutrality, it was nonetheless invaded by Germany during WWII, and the Luftwaffe assigned the Jagdgeschwader 53 (JG 53) fighter unit to the airport on May 21st, 1940. From there, they engaged in combat operations during the Battle of France. Moreover, JG 52 operated from LUX during the Blitzkrieg before moving into France. JG 53 remained at LUX until August 18th, when it moved to participate in the Battle of Britain. The airport remained out of use until September 1944, when the reconnaissance unit Asfklärungsgruppe 123 was assigned to the airport. However, this was short-lived, as after a few days, they moved east as US Army forces moved through the country and cleared the occupying German forces out. As such, US Army combat engineers arrived and performed work to prepare the airfield for Ninth Air Force combat aircraft, with the airfield designated as Advanced Landing Ground “A-97” Sandweiler, which mainly was used for reconnaissance purposes, as well as a transport supply airfield and to evacuate combat casualties to the UK.
On August 15th, 1945, LUX was returned to Luxembourg’s control. The present Terminal A was built in 1975. In March 1999, Luxair launched direct flights to Newark via a Boeing 767. However, the route was unprofitable and was canceled later that year. LUX was added as a stop on a TAROM route from Bucharest to New York in 2002 to increase passenger loads. As the terminal building was becoming overcrowded, a new terminal was built. Terminal B opened in 2004, initially intended to only cater to small aircraft. Moreover, there were only gates, with no check-in desks or arrivals hall.
Moreover, the construction of a new Terminal A began in 2005 and opened in May 2008. Terminal B underwent refurbishment and reopened in the summer of 2017 after adjustments were made, allowing it to handle larger aircraft and service up to 1 million passengers. Luxair’s Q400 fleet primarily uses it.
Airport location
The airport is located 3.7 miles east of Luxembourg City.
Airport facts
- LUX has a high-security zone far from most airport activities, intended to transport valuable goods such as art and jewels. Planes transporting such goods taxi away from the main airport facilities before loading.
- Not only is LUX the only international airport in Luxembourg, but it is also the only airport with a paved runway in the country.
- The FBO at LUX is Luxembourg Airport Business Aviation Center.
