It is the second-busiest airport in Poland in terms of passengers served, with close to 7.4 million in 2022. One runway is 07/25, which is 8,366 by 197 feet (concrete).

Airport history

KRK originated in 1964 as Kraków-Balice Airport, and until 1968 the airport also served as a military site. In 1972 the first passenger terminal opened. It sufficed until 1988, when a new terminal was built, opening in 1993. Moreover, the apron was renovated in 1995. That same year, the airport was renamed in honor of Pope John Paul II, who had served as Archbishop of Krakow from 1963 until 1978, at which time he ascended to the papacy. The airport underwent further modernization in 2002, bringing about new international connections. These included low-cost carriers Ryanair, easyJet, and others. On March 1st, 2007, a new domestic terminal (T2) was opened.
Furthermore, in May 2010, a new seven-story parking garage opened. Finally, on April 11th, 2013, work on a new airport terminal began, and it opened in December 2016. With a capacity of eight million passengers annually, the terminal serves international and domestic flights, has a modern luggage handling system, and features a roofed footbridge connecting the terminal to a hotel, the multi-level parking garage, and the railway station.
