Malmö Airport
Malmö Airport, or MMX to the IATA and ESMS to the ICAO, is Sweden's fourth-busiest airport. It also serves Copenhagen (the capital of Denmark), as it is 34 miles from the city center. In 2019 there were 1,975,479 passengers served with 18,676 aircraft movements. There are two runways: 11/29, which is 2,624 feet (asphalt), and 17/35, which is 9,186 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
MMX opened in 1972 as Sturup Airport, replacing the outdated Bulltofta Airport (which could not be expanded due to its proximity to the city, along with the noise from the new jets bringing about complaints from nearby communities). Plans for the new airport had already been hatched in the 1960s, and construction began in 1970. When MMX opened, the old airport closed (although Malmö Air Traffic Control remained at the old site until 1983, when it moved to the new airport). In 1996 MMX was served by three airlines, KLM Cityhopper (utilizing Fokker F50 turboprop flights to Amsterdam), Malmo Aviation (with British Aerospace BAe jets to London City Airport and Stockholm Bromma Airport), and Scandinavian Airlines System (via McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and MD-87 jets to Stockholm Arlanda Airport). MMX began to attract low-cost airlines around 2005-2008 due to its lower landing fees. Carriers saw this as a cheaper way to access the Copenhagen area. These included easyJet, Danish Sterling Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Wizz Air.
Airport location
The airport is located 17 miles east of Malmö and 16 miles southeast of Lund.
