Stockholm Arlanda Airport

Stockholm Arlanda Airport, or ARN to the IATA and ESSA to the ICAO, is an international airport in the Sigtuna municipality of Sweden. The largest airport in Sweden and the third-largest airport in the Nordic countries, it is a hub for Scandinavian Airlines and a focus city for Eurowings, Finnair, Norwegian Air Sweden, and Ryanair. In 2017 there were close to 27 million passengers served. There are three runways: 01L/19R, which is 10,830 feet (asphalt); 01R/19L, which is 8,202 feet (asphalt); and 08/26, which is 8,202 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

ARN originated in 1959 as an airport for practice flights. It opened in 1960 for limited civil traffic and was officially opened in 1962 (with the name Arlanda derived from the old name of the parish Ärlinghundra, Arland, and “landa,” the Swedish verb for “to land.” Scandinavian Airlines began initial intercontinental traffic via Douglas DC-8s, and Pan Am also served the airport early on. During the 1970s, the airport was served by the Boeing 747 jumbojet on flights to New York and weekend charters to the Canary Islands, while domestic flights were operated via Douglas DC-9 aircraft. Two new domestic terminals opened in 1990, known as “Domestic 2 and 3.” In 1992, Terminal 2 was falling into disuse due to a decrease in traffic, and the following year it began to be utilized for international traffic. As such, the top domestic and international terminals were renumbered as 4 and 5. In 2003 a third runway opened. However, due to environmental reasons (and most likely, protests by people living under its flight path), the third runway is only used during peak hours. In the Spring of 2015, construction began on an additional pier for Terminal 5 (to accommodate larger aircraft, such as the Airbus A380, and to cater to a more significant amount of people). In June 2022, a new pedestrian tunnel connecting the two terminals opened along with Terminal 4 (which had been closed due to COVID-19).

Airport location

The airport is located 23 miles north of Stockholm, and 25 miles southeast of Uppsala.
