Cape Town International Airport

Cape Town International Airport, or CPT to the IATA and FACT to the ICAO, is the primary international airport serving the city of Cape Town and is the only airport in the Cape Town metropolitan area offering regularly scheduled services. The second-busiest airport in South Africa and the fourth-busiest airport in Africa, it is a hub for Airlink and Fly Safair and a focus city for South African Airways. In the 12 months leading up to March 2022, there were 5,705,901 passengers served with 94,017 aircraft movements. There are two runways: 01/19, which is 10,502 feet (asphalt), and 16/34, which is 5,581 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

CPT originated in 1954 as D.F. Malan Airport (named after South Africa’s prime minister then), replacing Wingfield Aerodrome, the city’s previous airport. There was international service to the UK both directly and via Johannesburg. Moreover, in 1977 direct flights to South America were established via Varig flights to Rio de Janeiro. In the early 1990s, apartheid rule ended, at which time airport ownership was transferred from the state to the Airports Company South Africa. At this time, the airport was renamed Cape Town International Airport. In 1992 a route to North America was established via South African Airways to Miami (the destination later moved to Fort Lauderdale and then to Atlanta, finally ending in 2006). A new connection to North America was established in 2019 via United Airlines to Newark. The airport underwent considerable expansion before the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This included the construction of a Central Terminal Building. Passenger growth continued steadily, reaching over 10 million passengers in 2016. This was, of course, interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Airport location

The airport is located 12 miles from the Cape Town city center.
