Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport
Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport, or TFN to the IATA and GCXO to the ICAO, is the smaller of two international airports on the island of Tenerife, Spain. It is an inter-island hub connecting all seven of the Canary Islands with connections to the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. In 2019 there were 5.84 million passengers served, with 75,385 aircraft movements. There is one runway: 12/30, which is 11,135 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
TFN originated in May 1930 at Los Rodeos, as the first air link was established with the Spanish mainland via the Compañía de Líneas Aéreas Subvencionadas S.A. (C.L.A.S.S.A.). However, most indications point to aviation taking place before then, as an unofficial flight from Berlin on behalf of Deutsche Luft Hansa took place before (although no date has been provided). Once the decision to build out the was taken, a small hangar was built, and operations commenced on January 23rd, 1941, via an Iberia flight from Gando in Gran Canaria (utilizing a De Havilland DH89A Dragon Rapide). More hangers were added in 1946, along with a passenger terminal and a 2,625-foot paved runway. At this time, the airport officially opened to national and international traffic. The runway was extended several times during the 1940s and 1950s, reaching 7,874 feet in 1953 (it also had lighting installed, allowing for nighttime flights). The beginning of the jet age necessitated a further lengthening o the runway, and by 1964 it was extended to 9,843 feet to accommodate the DC-8 aircraft.
Moreover, the apron was expanded, and navigation aids were installed. The runway was again reinforced in 1971, and an ILS (Instrument Landing System) was installed as the Boeing 747 was introduced. In 2002 a new four-story airport terminal opened, with 12 gates, a car park, and motorway access ramps. In 2005, an inter-island domestic area was opened at the airport. In June 2009, a direct route to Miami was introduced by Air Europa via Airbus A330s. Although the route was only intended to be short-term, it was eventually extended due to high demand before being made permanent (although this was short-lasting, as the flight was discontinued in October 2010).
Airport location
The airport is located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, 7 miles from Santa Cruz.
Airport facts
- Fog has been an issue at TFN, causing several crashes (including the deadliest in history) in 1977, as two Boeing 747s collided on the runway, killing 583 people. As such, Tenerife South Airport was inaugurated the following year. However, it is located at sea level, so it largely avoids the fog issue.
