Cairo International Airport
Cairo International Airport, or CAI to the IATA and HECA to the ICAO, is the primary international airport of Cairo and the largest and busiest airport in Egypt. One of the busiest airports in Africa, it is a hub for Air Arabia Egypt, Air Cairo, Egyptair, and Nile Air. In 2012 there were 14,711,500 passengers served. There are three runways: 05L/23R, which is 10,830 feet (asphalt); 05C/23C, which is 13,120 feet (asphalt); and 05R/23L, which is 13,123 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
CAI originated during WWII as John Payne Field Air Force Base of the USAAF, constructed for the benefit of Allied Forces. It was a major Air Transport Command air cargo and passenger hub, connecting to the major airports in North Africa (Benghazi Airport, Algiers Airport, and Dakar Airport) and east (RAF Habbaniya in Iraq, Lydda Airport in British Palestine, and Jeddah Arabia). It also flew to Roberts Field in Liberia and, following the war, to Athens and other European destinations. The airport was replaced in 1963 by Cairo International Airport. This included what is now known as Terminal 1. In 1986 Terminal 2 was inaugurated with seven boarding gates. It underwent a $400 million structural overhaul starting in April 2010 and reopened on September 28th, 2016, with 14 gates and five remote stands (capable of handling 7.5 million passengers). In 2004 construction began on Terminal 3, which officially opened on April 27th, 2009. With the capacity to handle 11 million annual passengers, the terminal was larger than the two other terminals combined. It includes two piers (which can be extended), with 23 gates in total (2 of which can service the Airbus A380), 110 check-in counters, 76 immigration counters, and more.
Airport location
The airport is located in Heiopolis, 9.3 miles northeast of the business center of Cairo.
