Nantucket Memorial Airport

Nantucket Memorial Airport, or ACK, is a public airport on the south side of the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The town of Nantucket owns it. For the 12-month period ending April 30th, 2021, the airport had 50,963 aircraft operations, 56% air taxi, 41% general aviation, 2% commercial, and % one military. The airport covers 1,200 acres and has two runways: 6/24, which is 6,303 by 150 feet (asphalt), and 15/33, which is 4,500 by 100 ft (asphalt).

Airport history

The origins of the airport date back to the 1930s, when a farmer in Nobadeer named Leslie Holm and his pilot friend David Raub plowed over and smoothed some of the cornfields belonging to Mr. Holm. They then formed the Nobadeer Flying Service, comprised of three small planes. The intention was to offer both charters and flight instructions. Shortly thereafter, they began allowing the Town of Nantucket to use the airfield. During WWII, the US Navy assumed control of the airport, and it was called the Naval Auxiliary Air Field Nantucket. The Navy constructed both temporary buildings and bunkers. While the buildings were removed after the war, the bunkers remain today and are used for airport storage (as they were constructed of concrete and steel). In 2009 the terminal (dated to the 1950s) underwent an upgrade and expansion, whereby the previous 12,000 square feet were modernized while an additional 18,000 square feet were added. The goal was to expand the airport's capacity and segregate the air taxi traffic from the rest (as air taxi passengers do not require screening, and the rest do).

Airport location

The airport is located three miles southeast of the Nantucket town center.

Airport facts

  • Mr. Holm's old farmhouse still stands today, although airport buildings surround it. It is at the intersection of Old South and Nobadeer Farm Roads.
  • Most of the parking at the airport is reserved for general aviation.
  • The airport apron has eight parking stands for aircraft operated by Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines. In addition, there are four larger parking stands for Jet Blue, American Eagle Airlines, Delta Connection, and United Express for regional jets.
  • The airport is the second busiest in the state after Logan International Airport due to the heavy corporate traffic during the high season.
