Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport
Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport, or BHB, is a county-owned, public-use airport in Trenton, Hancock County, Maine. The FAA categorizes the airport as a non-primary commercial service facility. However, it gets particularly busy during the summer months, as private aircraft operations bring visitors to the numerous summer colonies in the county. For the 12 months ending September 30th, 2016, the airport had 21,250 aircraft operations, 84% general aviation, 8% scheduled commercial, 7% air taxi, and less than 1% military. The airport covers 468 acres and has two runways: 4/22, which is 5,200 by 100 feet (asphalt), and 17/35, which is 3,253 by 75 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
BHB was built in 1934 by the Town of Bar Harbor and was leased in 1941 by the U.S. government, and with the intent of supporting naval operations, new runways and facilities were constructed. Upon completion, the airport consisted of three runways, a parking apron, blimp mooring facilities, and a seaplane ramp. During WWII, the airport was known as the Bar Harbor Naval Auxiliary Air Facility, and it supported the operations of Naval Air Station Brunswick. As such, the airport supported six OS2U Kingfisher aircraft that were used for scout observation and offshore patrols for German ships (generally U-boats). As the war continued, the airport was also used to train British and Canadian pilots in basic carrier operating procedures. The U.S. government returned the airport to the Town of Bar Harbor following the war. However, the town continued to own and operate the airport until March 20th, 1962, when the airport was transferred to Hancock County.
Airport location
The airport is located nine miles northwest of the central business district of Bar Harbor.
