Monmouth Executive Airport
Monmouth Executive Airport, or BLM, is a privately-owned, public-use airport in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is categorized as a general aviation reliever airport. In the year ending January 1st, 2010, BLM had 57,229 aircraft operations, 83% general aviation, and 17% air taxi. The airport covers 850 acres and has two runways: 14/32, which is 7,371 by 85 feet (asphalt), and 3/21, which is 3,512 by 50 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
BLM dates back to 1938, when aviation enthusiast Ed Brown acquired the original 700-acre plot of land and, as legend has it, cleared it himself by towing a section of steel railroad track behind a WWI army tank loaned to him by the American Legion. In WWII, Ed served as a Navy pilot, and at the culmination of the war, he returned to the airfield. There were various businesses at the airfield over the years, including a drive-in/fly-in movie theater, an amusement park with a Train Ride, and more. Skydiving companies and the “infamous banner tower fleet” that flew banners along the Jersey Shore during summers also called the airport home. Over the years, Ed had a contentious relationship with the town, including offering to sell them the airport, only to pull out of the deal when they missed his deadline by a few weeks. He passed in 2006, and in 2013 the Wall Aviation consortium purchased the airport from the Brown family. They set out to modernize the airport to serve corporate clients and thereby evicted the skydivers, banner tower businesses, and non-aviation businesses whose practices were not in line with the new vision for the airport. Furthermore, the airport has gone into 24/7 operation, and security fencing has been put up so the runways cannot be accessed by vehicles, and the runway lights are always kept on.
Airport location
The airport is located in Wall Township, six miles west of Belmar, east of Farmingdale.
