Airport history
COE originated as Coeur d'Alene Municipal Airport in 1942, built by the Corps of Engineers as a fighter and light bomber training base for the Army Air Corps. It had two asphalt runways, which measured 5,400 by 500 feet, with a 5,400 by 150 foot taxiway. The airport was later known as Coeur d'Alene Air Terminal. In September 2007, it was renamed Coeur d'Alene Airport / Pappy Boyington Field in honor of Col. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, a WWII multiple ace Medal of Honor recipient who was born in Coeur d'Alene.
Airport location
The airport is located nine miles northwest of the central business district of Coeur d'Alene.
Airport facts
- COE was only the second Delta configuration air base ever built, a design where runways create a triangle, thereby centralizing the facility. The FAA has now determined this configuration to be unsafe, and a Master Plan is in place to decouple the runways and shorten runway 20 to meet the new standards.
- There are two FBOs, StanCraft Jet Center and AirNav.
- The airport services primarily general aviation and corporate traffic.
- There are two non-aeronautical businesses on the field, a composite parts manufacturer and a facility that makes surge protectors.
