Colorado Springs Municipal Airpory

The city of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, or COS (known as Colorado Springs Airport, is a city-owned public civil-military airport in El Paso County, Colorado. It is the second-busiest commercial airport in Colorado and is also home to Peterson Space Force Base. There is one terminal with two concourses, totaling 17 gates. In 2019 there were 135,431 aircraft operations. The airport covers 7,200 acres, and there are three runways: 17L/35R, which is 13,501 by 150 feet (concrete); 17R/35L, which is 11,022 by 150 feet (asphalt); and 13/31, which is 8,269 by 150 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

COS originated in 1927, opening on 640 acres with two gravel runways. For the first decade, the airport was mainly serviced by small airlines operating a mail route, only occasionally carrying passengers. Regular passenger service began in 1937 through Continental Airlines, and in 1943 Braniff Airways started to service the airport. In 1942 the first terminal was built (art deco style), although the military took over the airport shortly thereafter due to WWII. After the war, the airport was returned to the city, and a new terminal was built in 1966. In 1980 the terminal was expanded with six additional gates. In 1991 the airport had three runways, all 150 feet wide. The longest of the three was 13,501 feet, the longest in the state. That same year a new terminal was approved, and the 280,000-square-foot building opened on October 22nd, 1994, with 12 gates (at the cost of $140 million). Later in the decade, another five-gate concourse was added on the terminal's east side. In 1996, the original terminal from 1941(along with two hangars and a caretaker residence) was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places - they currently form the Peterson Air and Space Museum campus. There have been various attempts to expand service to the airport over the years, with 1996 being the busiest year, serving almost 5 million passengers. This was partly due to the Western Pacific Airlines hub, which moved to Denver at the end of that year. Most recently, Southwest Airlines began to service the airport in 2021. Also, in 2021, Runway 17R/35L closed for remodeling, including new asphalt, lighting, and navigation equipment. Furthermore, it was announced that the main concourse would undergo a $10 to $20 million renovation.

Airport location

The airport is located six miles southeast of downtown Colorado Springs.

Airport facts

  • In March 2022, plans were announced to significantly expand the airport, with the gates doubling from 12 to 24 (with the five-gate expansion from the 90s closing, as they are not in use currently) and the air traffic control tower being relocated.
  • There is a permanent art collection at COS, including UNTITLED, a sculpture collection by William Barriss Martin, and SHADOWS by Rebecca Yaffe, amongst others.
  • A Premier Membership at COS entitles members to complementary long-term parking and access to the Premier Lounge.

The Vista Members' fleet (formerly the XO Dedicated Fleet) has over 350 aircraft for you to choose from, ranging from the light but luxurious Citation Ultra to the extra-wide Challenger 605, which seats up to 12 passengers.
