Key West International Airport

Key West International Airport, or EYW, is an international airport in Monroe County, Florida. An enclosed walkway connects two terminal buildings. The three most prominent airlines are Allegiant Air, American Airlines, and American Eagle. In 2011, there were 62,293 aircraft operations: 71% general aviation, 16% air taxi, 13% airline, and less than 1% military. There were 59 aircraft based at the airport, 61% single-engine, 37% multi-engine, and 2% helicopter. The airport covers 334 acres, with one runway: 09/27, which is 5,076 by 100 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

EYW originated in 1913 with a flight to Cuba by Augustin Parla, whereas in 1928, Pan Am Airways began scheduling flights from Key West. Named Meacham Field, the main runway was used by both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, the airport was taken over by the city and renamed Key West Municipal Airport. In 1953 title to the airport was given to Monroe County, which allowed the county to apply for FAA grants. Around this time, the airport was renamed Key West International Airport. Although the first paved runway was only completed in 1956, National Airlines had already served the airport since 1944. The ground-level terminal was completed in 1957 (it now serves arriving passengers). In 1968 National began the first jet flights into EYW with Boeing 727-100s. Over the years, the airport was served by Air Florida, Eastern Airlines, Piedmont Airlines (a service that USAir continued following its acquisition of and merger with Piedmont), Southwest Airlines, United Express, American Eagle, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, and Air Tran Airways. The airport was also served by numerous regional and commuter airlines with turboprop and prop aircraft during the 80s and 90s. In 2009, a second building was added to the terminal (over the parking lot), more than doubling the terminal space. In 2018, the runway was extended by 277 feet, while ten feet-wide shoulders were paved on each side of the runway in a $10 million project.

Airport location

The airport is located two miles east of the main commercial center of Key West.

Airport facts

  • As the runway is only 5,076 feet long, flights departing EYW often have weight restrictions.
  • Key West is known for its free-roaming colorful chickens. While guests on the island are encouraged to photograph or hang out with the chickens, feeding them is illegal.
  • Work on a new Concourse A began in September 2022 and will feature seven jet bridges.
  • In December 2020, EYW became the first airport in Florida to implement a new autonomous robot to clean the airport while eradicating 99.9% of pathogens.

When considering the cost to charter a jet, it might be tempting to think that purchasing a jet will save you money in the long term. However, storage fees, crew fees, fuel costs, and aircraft depreciation are just a few of the ongoing costs that make ownership a burden. Charter, enjoy your experience and live free.
