Airport history
Glacier International originated in 1942 as Flathead County Airport. Airline service began in 1950 via Northwest Airlines, although passenger traffic was scarce for years. In 1970 the airport was given international designation, at which point it was renamed Glaciar International Airport. Passenger traffic increased after that (increasing more than fivefold between 1974 and 1998) as Hughes Airwest, Western Airlines (later acquired by Delta Air Lines), the original Frontier Airlines (1950-1986), and Horizon air all offered new jet services. In 1981, the terminal was upgraded, and in the 90s, further upgrades to the terminal were undertaken, along with renovations to the runways and other facilities.
Airport location
The airport is located six miles northeast of Kalispell.
Airport facts
- The airport has two identifiers, as it was initially assigned FCA for Flathead County Airport. Once it changed its name, the FAA changed its identifier to GPI. However, the IATA had already assigned that identifier to Guapi Airport in Colombia, so it kept FCA.
- Glacier Jet Center and Rocky Mountain Aviation provide general aviation services at the airport.
- As the airport is a Port of Entry for private aircraft, there is a U.S. Customs on-site.
