Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport

Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport, or HVN, is a public airport in New Haven County, Connecticut. It is owned by the City of New Haven, and is categorized as a non-hub primary commercial service facility by the FAA. For the 12 months ending May 31st, 2021, there were 36,029 aircraft operations, 92% general aviation, 6% air taxi, 1% scheduled commercial, and less than 1% military. In November 2022, there were 63 aircraft based at the airport, 43 single-engine, four multi-engine, and 13 jets. The airport covers 394 acres, and there is one runway: 2/20, which is 5,600 by 150 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

HVN originated in 1931 as New Haven Municipal Airport (in 1961, it was renamed in honor of John H. “Jack” Tweed, its first manager). The first airline to provide service was Li_Con Airways, Inc, from November 1933 to July 1934. In 1934 American Airlines began to serve the airport, which lasted until 1960. At that point, they were replaced by Allegheny Airlines and Allegheny Commuter. Furthermore, Eastern Airlines began service in 1948, serving the airport until 1970, when they left because of legal challenges involving a runway extension (they briefly returned from 1972 to 1974). In 1978, New Haven Airways (the airport’s FBO) began scheduled flights, becoming New Haven’s hometown airline (NewAir) in 1980. It ended all services in 1985, having merged with Pilgrim Airlines and then purchased by Hartford-based Business Express Airlines (becoming a Delta Connection feeder airline). In 1987 the airport was also served by Provincetown-Boston Airlines, operating as Continental Express (as their parent company merged into Continental Airlines). USAir Express and United Express also served it. This momentum ended by the late 90s, as service in the airport began to decline. In 2004, Comair (flying for Delta Connection) began service, but this ended in 2006. This left US Airways Express (Piedmont) as the only airline at HVN. In 2015 the company became American Eagle. This service ended on September 30th, 2021. On June 14th, 2019, Southern Airways Express began seasonal service from HVN to Nantucket, Massachusetts, while on November 3rd, Avelo Airlines began to service the airport as well.

Airport location

The airport is located three miles southeast of downtown New Haven.

Airport facts

  • HVN operated by AFCO AvPorts of Dulles, Virginia, under contract with the Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport Authority.
  • The FBO is Robinson Aviation. They have been in this role since 1989, providing on-site maintenance, flight training, and aircraft rental via the New Haven Aviation Center, in addition to the standard fueling, ground handling, and concierge services.
  • HVN is home to the Connecticut Wing Civil Air Patrol 73rd Minuteman Squadron (NER-CT-073).
  • There has been a long battle regarding extending the airport's runways, which is necessary if HVN wants to attract commercial carriers (as the newer jets will require these runways). This disagreement goes back to 2002, with the airport wanting longer runways and citizens opposing due to quality of life and environmental concerns. This culminated in a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2020, which meant that the state could not prevent the airport from expanding its runways and services.
