Hilton Head Island Airport
Hilton Head Island Airport, or HHH to the IACA and HXD to the FAA, is an airport in Beauford County, South Carolina. It is categorized by the FAA as a primary service commercial airport and is owned by Beauford County. There is one terminal building with four gates. For the 12 months ending July 31st, 2018, there were 37,632 aircraft operations, 81% general aviation, 17% air taxi, and 2% military. At the time, there were 89 aircraft based at the airport, 62% single-engine, 26% multi-engine, 9% jet, 2% helicopter, and 1% ultralight. The airport covers 131 acres and has one runway: 3/21, which is 5,000 by 100 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
HHH originated in 1967, and the airport was opened with the help of professional golfer Arnold Palmer. This was due in part to the history of Hilton Head Island, which had been known for its world-class championship golf courses. As such, Palmer, who was also a pilot, was the first person to land at the new airport.
In 1995, the current 18,000-square-foot terminal building was completed, with four gates. 2018 saw several improvements, such as the extension of the runway from 4,300 feet to 5,000 feet (the FAA recommended the extension be to 5,300 feet, but local opposition on the island necessitated the shorter extension). Furthermore, Taxiway A has been relocated by 100 feet, trees in the flight path have been removed, airfield drainage components have been added, and the general aviation parking area has been revised.
Past service to HHH has included Eastern Airlines, American Eagle Airlines, Continental Connection, US Airways Express, and Delta Connection. On July 5th, 2018 Republic Airways, began serving HHH with the E175, the first commercially scheduled jet service to the airport.
