Lancaster Airport

Lancaster Airport, or LNS, is a public-use airport in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Owned by the Lancaster Airport Authority, it is categorized by the FAA as a general aviation airport. However, its total enplanements in later years qualify it as a non-primary commercial service airport. In 2020, LNS had 73,087 aircraft operations, 91% general aviation, 7% air taxi, and 3% military. In April 2022, there were 120 aircraft based at LNS, 99 single-engine, nine multi-engine, six jets, five helicopters, and one glider. The airport covers 850 acres and has two runways: 8/26, which is 6,933 by 150 feet (asphalt); and 13/31, which is 4,102 by 100 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

LNS originated in 1933 when the Lancaster Joint Aviation Committee was formed to operate a municipal airport. The committee knew that they could use War Relief Funds and that an airport would benefit local unemployed construction workers (as they were in the midst of the Great Depression). As such, 180 acres in southern Lititz were purchased, and the airport was constructed. On August 17th, 1935, the airport was dedicated to Lancaster Municipal Airport. By 1936, there were two hard-surfaced runways, and the airport was certified to operate both in the daytime and at night. Following WWII, the airport was becoming outdated, so government funds were used to modernize and expand it (with about one-fifth of the $1.2 million in funds being raised from the community). The upgrades were completed, and on June 18th, 1949, the airport was dedicated as the “New” Lancaster Municipal Airport, covering 474 acres with two 4,100-foot runways. In 1951, the airport was renamed Lancaster Airport. In the mid-90s, the terminal was both renovated and expanded. At a later point, Runway 8/26 was lengthened, bringing it to 6,934 feet long.

Airport location

The airport is located five miles north of the central business district of Lancaster.
