Missoula Montana Airport
Missoula Montana Airport, or MSO, is a primary commercial service airport in Missoula County, Montana. Owned by the Missoula County Airport Authority, the airport recently changed its name from the Missoula International Airport to its current name. In 2017 there were 25,944 aircraft operations, 63% general aviation, 16% air taxi, 20% airline, and 2% military. At the time, there were 161 aircraft based at the airport, 56% single-engine, 20% multi-engine, 18% jet, and 14% helicopter. The airport covers 2,700 acres and has two runways: 12/30, which is 9,501 by 150 feet (asphalt), and 8/26, which is 4,612 by 75 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
MSO originated in 1923 as a landing strip just south of the university. In contrast, in 1927, another landing strip near the Western Montana Fair Grounds was sold to the county, and that would become Missoula’s first true airport. In 1941, Missoula County Airport opened (having used Works Progress Administration funds), and this would gradually replace the original airport (which closed in 1954). In 1968, the airport was renamed Johnson-Bell Field. In 1977 the Missoula County Airport Authority was formed, tasked with managing the day-to-day operations at the airport, as well as its maintenance, expansion, and long-term planning. The terminal building was expanded in 2007 with the addition of a new security screening area. In September 2012, a 101-foot control tower was completed, the tallest in Montana and one of the tallest in the Pacific Northwest (at the cost of $6.77 million). Furthermore, the construction of a new terminal building (which will replace the original) began in 2018 and was scheduled for completion in 2022. Known as Phase 1, its completion will bring about the demolition of the original terminal building, after which Phase 2 can begin.
