Montrose Regional Airport
Montrose Regional Airport, or MTJ, is a non-towered public airport in zip code 81401 in southwestern Colorado. The airport is primarily seasonal, with most traffic arriving in winter for the Telluride Ski Resort (an hour-and-a-half drive away). The airport covers 966 acres of land and has two runways: 17/35, 10,000 feet (asphalt), and 13/31, which is 7,510 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
MTJ originated in September 1946, with initial service from Monarch Airlines. Its successor, Frontier Airlines, began to service MTJ in the ’50s, and the first jets at the airport were Frontier Boeing 737-200s in 1982. At that time, Runway 12/30 was 8,500 feet long. On June 25th, 1988, an enhanced and expanded MTJ was unveiled and dedicated. As such, the new terminal featured a sense of small-town hospitality, including a two-sided fireplace in the passenger seating area, a skylighted ceiling of knotty pine, and a tile floor patterned with a Ute pictogram. Furthermore, the walls are an earthy, ground-faced cinderblock, while the gable roof has skylights and dormers decorated with the Hopi good luck symbol. Further expansion occurred in the ‘90s, with Runway 17/35 being built at 10,000 feet.
Airport location
The airport is located on the northwest side of Montrose.
