Martha's Vineyard Airport
Martha's Vineyard Airport, or MVY, is a public airport in Dukes County, Massachusetts. The airport is owned by Dukes County and is the only airport on the island of Martha's Vineyard to have commercial airline service. There is one terminal with two gates. For the 12-month period ending March 31st, 2017, the airport had 40,555 aircraft operations: 53% general aviation, 43% air taxi, 3% commercial, and less than 1% military. At the time, there were 72 aircraft based in the airport, 59 single-engine, 12 multi-engine, and one helicopter. The airport covers 688 acres, and there are two runways: 6/24, which is 5,504 by 100 feet (asphalt), and 15/33, which is 3,297 by 75 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
MVY was built in response to WWII as Naval Auxiliary Air Facility Martha’s Vineyard (NAAF Martha’s Vineyard). The base was meant to support the training of naval aviators before deployment aboard aircraft carriers in the Pacific. In 1945, it was renamed Naval Auxiliary Air Station Martha’s Vineyard and placed in caretaker status the following year. In 1959 it was finally transferred to Dukes County. The original base operations building was a wooden structure that served as a terminal, and it was replaced by a new terminal building in 2001. Other construction in the new century included the shifting of 200 feet of Runway 6/24 and the renovation of taxiways to allow several modern jets to operate at the airport. The ramp was also renovated twice to accommodate various jets, and spots were added on both occasions. 2017 saw the addition of a new firefighter department building (in place of the old Naval building), and the following year Runway 6/24 was renovated and reconstructed, with the addition of NO Taxi islands at the cost of $10 million. Parts of the ramp were repaved in 2020, and more markings were added. 2021 was the busiest year ever at the airport, with 65,992 passengers, although it appears it will be surpassed in 2022, which has also seen the airlines increase their service to the airport.
Airport location
The airport is located in the middle of the island, three miles south of the central business district of Vineyard Haven.
Airport facts
- On the western wall of the main hall of the terminal building, there are historical photos telling the stories of the Navy squadrons that trained at the base during WWII.
- As the terminal does not have a permanent waiting area, during summer, there is a tent where all TSA-checked passengers must remain to await their flights.
- There is a plan to expand the terminal, build new hangars, and renovate the taxiways and some of the ramps to make the airport more accommodating for general aviation.
The benefits of a private jet are numerous. For starters, you avoid crowded airports and unpredictable airlines. But that's just the cherry on top, as there is so much more, like your choice of flight time, airport, catering service, and more.
