DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, also known as PDK, is a county-owned, public-use airport in DeKalb County, Georgia. It has airline service with Ultimate Air Shuttle to Cincinnati and with Southern Airways Express to Memphis and Destin. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems has categorized it as a reliever airport. The airport covers 745 acres. It has three runways: 3R/21L, which is 6,001 by 100 feet (concrete surface); 3L/21R, which is 3,746 by 150 feet (asphalt surface); and 16/34, which is 3,967 by 150 feet (asphalt surface). It also has one helipad, H1, with a concrete surface of 56 by 56 feet. For the 12-month period ending August 31st, 2010, PDK had 202,491 aircraft operations, 99.9% general aviation, and 0.1% military. PDK has averaged 230,000 annual operations for over 30 years.

Airport history

During WWI, Camp Gordon, a military training camp, was located on the grounds that are now PDK. The base closed in 1922. In 1940, the U.S. government authorized the construction of a military airport on the site. Airport operations began on March 22nd, 1941, just a few months before the U.S. entered WWII. The base was called Naval Air Station Atlanta. Additionally, barracks that had been used during the war were converted to classrooms for Southern Technical Institute, a new engineering technology school created by Georgia Tech for former military officers. As the United States Navy had leased the airport from the county, it was converted from military to civilian use between 1957 and 1959 (the Naval Air Station and the Southern Technical Institute were moved). By 1975 more than 400 aircraft, as well as 48 corporations, were based at PDK. A new control tower was built in 1988, and it stands 130 feet tall. The helipad was added in the 1990s.

Airport location

The airport is located in the city of Chamblee, just northeast of Atlanta.

Airport facts

  • PDK is the second busiest airport in Georgia (after Jackson-Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport - ATL), largely due to its role as a reliever of smaller aircraft traffic from ATL. In addition, Atlanta's four major network-affiliated television stations use the helipad for electronic news gathering from the air.
  • There is a children's playground, Georgia's first aviation park.
  • Boxing legend Muhammad Ali arrived in PDK when he came to light the Olympic Torch for the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta.
