Airport history
NPE originated in the 1930s as Northeast Airport. Originally just a grass field with no paved runways, it was one of three small airports in the area and the most prominent of the three. During WW II, the US Army Air Corps began construction of a 545-acre air base at NPE. Unfortunately, the project was never completed, and the airport was turned over to the city in 1944. nonetheless, the city finished the work, end Philadelphia northeast airport opened in June 1945. in 1948, the airport was renamed North Philadelphia Airport. In 1960, the airport was expanded as Runway 6/24 was extended to its present length.
Furthermore, Runway 10/28 was abandoned at this time. In 1980, the airport was once again renamed Northeast Philadelphia Airport. Starting in 1973, Ransome Airlines was servicing PNE as Allegheny commuter, a feeder for Allegheny Airlines. Ransome Airlines maintained its headquarters and maintenance facility at the airport. Its scheduled passenger operations came to an end during the PATCO strike of 1981, and Ransome was later sold to Pan American World Airways and then to Trans World Airlines (ending as Trans World Express). The maintenance base continued operations through the early 1990s, eventually shutting down in 1995.
Airport location
The airport is located at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Ashton Road.
