At the time, there were 132 aircraft based at the airport, 96 single-engine, 12 multi-engine, 16 jets, six helicopters, and two military. Airport history
PSM was constructed in the 1930s, and in 1941 improvements were announced as a result of the oncoming WW II. However, in 1942 the airport was closed to civilian traffic due to the war. In 1944, PSM was released to the U.S. Navy, which had a presence at the nearby Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The U.S. Air Force took over PSM in 1951, which selected the airport as a Strategic Air Command Base. During the following four years, additional land was purchased, and the air base was expanded, renamed Portsmouth Air Force Base. In 1957, the base was once again renamed Pease Air Force Base in honor of New Hampshire captive Captain Charles Pease Jr, who was awarded a Medal of Honor for heroism during World War II.
Furthermore, in 1966, the New Hampshire National Guard relocated to Pease Air Force Base. By the late 1980s, Pease Air Force Base was one of the 86 military installations selected to be closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process, and in 1991 Pease Air Force Base was closed. After its closure, most of the Pease Air Force Base was transferred to the Pease Development Authority. In 1999, domestic and international terminal passenger service was provided to PSM by Pan American Airways. The service lasted until 2004 when the airline went out of business. Other airlines to service PSM include Delta Connection, Allegiant Air (2005-2007), and Skybus Airlines (May 2007 to April 2008). In 2013, Allegiant Air returned, and they offer service to several destinations to this day. Furthermore, on December 6th, 2018, Frontier Airlines began providing service to their hub in Orlando, Florida, and on January 22nd, 2021, an expanded Passenger Terminal opened for the benefit of customers of Allegiant Air. In September 2020, a $24 million runaway reconstruction project was completed.
