Oakland County International Airport

Oakland County International Airport, or PTK, is a county-owned public-use airport in Oakland County, Michigan. Categorized by the FAA as a non-primary commercial service facility, PTK is the sixth-busiest airport in the US (in terms of passenger traffic) of airports that offer no scheduled commercial flights. In 2021, the airport had 126,290 aircraft operations, 90% general aviation, 10% air taxi, less than 1% scheduled commercial, and less than 1% military. At the time, there were 623 aircraft based at the airport, 308 single-engine, 204 jets, 96 multi-engine, and 15 helicopters. The airport covers 750 acres, and there are three runways: 9R/27L, which is 6,521 by 150 feet (asphalt); 9L/27R, which is 5,676 by 100 feet (asphalt); and 18/36, which is 2,582 by 75 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

PTK originated in November 1928 with the purchase of 160 acres by the city of Pontiac. The airport was opened on November 27th as Pontiac Municipal Airport, and an additional 80 acres were acquired within a year. In 1930, construction of the first hangar commenced. On February 11th of that year, PTK became the first airport in the nation to win an A-1-A rating from the US Department of Commerce, which at the time was in charge of the aviation industry. In 1967, the airport was acquired by Oakland County in exchange for the old Masonic Temple building in Downtown Pontiac. On March 7th, 1996, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners renamed the airport Oakland County International Airport. Within three years, PTK ranked as the 27th-busiest airport in the nation, as well as the nation's fourth busiest reliever airport and 5th busiest general aviation airport. On January 2nd, 1996, full-time US Customs Service became available at PTK. Finally, in 2011, a "green" terminal was completed.

  • PTK hosts an open house every year, showcasing military and vintage aircraft. The Civil Air Patrol secures the open house. 
  • Due to PTK's proximity to the now-defunct Palace at Auburn Hills, many charters carrying various sports teams landed at the airport. 
  • PTK is home to seven FBOs and no less than 150 businesses.
