Santa Fe Regional Airport

Santa Fe Regional Airport, or SAF, is a public-use airport in Santa Fe County, New Mexico. Serving the Santa Fe and Los Alamos areas, SAF is served by American Eagle and United Express. SAF also has a lot of private jet activity. Although it was categorized by the FAA as a general aviation airport in 2008, by 2019, it was classified as a commercial service - a primary non-hub airport. In 2021 there were 57,300 aircraft operations, 83% general aviation, 6% military, 6% commercial, and 5% air taxi. At the time, there were 190 aircraft based at the airport, 130 single-engine, 22 multi-engine, 23 jets, 11 military, and three helicopters. The airport covers 2,128 acres, and there are three runways: 2/20, which is 8,366 by 150 feet (asphalt); 15/33, which is 6,316 by 100 feet (asphalt); and 10/28, which is 6,301 by 75 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

SAF opened in 1941 as Santa Fe County Municipal Airport. It was initially served by Continental Airlines flying the Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar twin prop aircraft (although by the mid-40s, they switched to the Douglas DC-3). In 1957 the terminal building opened with 11,000 square feet of space, and it was renovated in 1988 and in 2004. In 1963 Continental was replaced by Frontier and Texas Tran Airways (later Texas International Airlines); however, these two add left by June 1972, citing unsafe runway conditions. Then, the airport began receiving service from commuter airlines flying much smaller aircraft, including Cessna 402s and Piper Navajos. By and large, 19-seat aircraft were used. By the end of 2007, the airport had lost all airline service, although service did resume in the summer of 2009, as SAF gained its first major airline code-share flights. This brought about a large increase in passenger traffic. To better handle the increases in passenger traffic, the terminal was remodeled in 2016. This was done by removing large parts of the restaurant in exchange for added gate space.
Furthermore, the airport manager was relocated to a portable building, and his office was converted into a baggage claim room. In addition to the remodeling, it had become apparent to airport officials that an expansion was necessary. As such, on September 27th, 2017, an expansion plan was approved, which included added gate space, a new baggage claim area, a new rental car area, and a new parking lot. At this point in time, the airport was renamed Santa Fe Regional Airport. Work began on the latest additions on February 25th, 2022. Other improvements include redesigning the roadway system and a complete rebuild of the parking area. A second phase is currently being planned, with a 13,000-foot addition to the south side of the terminal, including a baggage claim area and a restaurant.

Airport location

The airport is located 10 miles southwest of the Santa Fe city center.
