Friedman Memorial Airport

Friedman Memorial Airport, or SUN, is a city-owned public-use airport in Blaine County, Idaho. The airport serves the resort communities of Sun Valley and Ketchum and the surrounding areas of the Wood River Valley. The Friedman Memorial Airport Authority operates it. Delta Air Lines has always been the dominant carrier at the airport. For the 12 months ending May 31st, 2007, the airport had 68,540 aircraft operations, 58% general aviation, 38% air taxi, 3% scheduled commercial, and less than 1% military. The airport covers 211 acres and has one runway: 13/31, which is 7,550 by 100 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

SUN originated in 1931, with a large plot of land donated by the Friedman family to benefit the airport (although historic photos suggest the site had been used for aviation as far back as 1916). However, scheduled commercial service only began in 1960 with West Coast Airlines (which predated Air West and Hughes Airwest). Furthermore, the airport scheduled seasonal service with Horizon Air and America West Airlines during ski season. The airport was also served by Sun Valley Airlines during the 1970s, as well as other regional airlines. In 2013, Delta Connection began servicing the airport, with United Express arriving a year later.

The airport is located one nautical mile southeast of the central business district of Hailey.

Airport facts

  • The airport was named after Samuel M. Friedman, a local merchant, and rancher who served as mayor of Hailey from 1909 to 1913. His children, Leon and Lucille, donated the land to the city. 
  • The airport is considered the Gateway to the Sun Valley. 
  • The Friedman Memorial Airport Authority is the result of an agreement between the city of Hailey and Blaine County. 
  • A new overflow parking lot has just opened in anticipation of a busy winter season.
