Trenton-Mercer Airport

Trenton-Mercer Airport, or TTN, is a county-owned, joint civil-military public airport in the West Trenton section of Ewing Township, Mercer County, New Jersey. The airport is mainly focused on general and corporate aviation, although it does have service by one scheduled airline. The FAA categorizes it as a non-hub primary commercial service facility. In the 12 months ending April 2nd, 2019, the airport had 112 513 aircraft operations, 92% general aviation, 4% commercial, 4% air taxi, and less than 1% military. It is home to the Army Aviation Support Facility #2 and the 1st Battalion, 150th Aviation Regiment of the New Jersey Army National Guard, and has one terminal with four gates. The airport covers 1,345 acres and has two runways: 6/24, which is 6,006 by 150 feet (asphalt), and 16/34, which is 4,800 by 150 feet (asphalt). There are also three helipads, H1, H2, and H3, which are all 64 by 64 feet.

Airport history

The airport was originally Alfred Reeder’s farm field, and in 1907 an aircraft first landed there. In 1929 Skillman Airport opened to the public at the location. In WWII, the airport expanded to accommodate test flights of the Grumman TBF Avenger carrier-based torpedo bombers for the US Navy, which were produced in the nearby General Motors Inland Fisher Guide Plant. After the war, the airport was returned to the county and renamed Mercer County Airport. Nonetheless, the Navy reestablished a presence nearby, as they constructed the Naval Air Warfare Center Trenton adjacent to the airport, which remained in operation until 1997. In 1994 the Mercer County Airport Police and Fire Department was disbanded and replaced by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and ProTec Fire Service as part of cost-cutting measures. In 1995 the airport was again renamed the Trenton-Mercer Airport, as it had been hoped that the renaming would identify the airport with the city of Trenton, the capital of New Jersey. In 1998 the human weather observers based at the airport were replaced with an NWS/FAA automated surface observing system (ASOS).

Airport location
