Cherry Capital Airport
Cherry Capital Airport, or TVC, is a public-use airport in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. Categorized by the FAA as a non-hub primary commercial service facility, it is owned by Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. The airport terminal building has one concourse with six gates. In 2021, the airport had 101,106 aircraft operations, 75% general aviation, 11% scheduled commercial, 8% air taxi, and 6% military. At the time, there were 125 aircraft based at the airport, 98 single-engine and 15 multi-engine airplanes, five helicopters, and seven jets. The airport covers 1,026 acres, and there are two runways: 10/28, which is 7,016 by 150 feet (asphalt), and 18/36, which is 5,378 by 150 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
TVC originated in 1936 as Traverse City Airport. It originally opened with four runways, three of which have since been replaced. In 2004, a new airport terminal building was opened on the south side of the east-west runway. The terminal features advanced security measures, which were recommended in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, allowing the airport to comply better with security regulations. These measures also allowed the airport to be better able to accommodate a larger number of flights and passengers.
Furthermore, the runways were reconfigured at this time, and the third diagonal runway was removed. The east–west runway was extended twice, in 2013 and in 2017, to allow for both more and possible international flights. In 2022, the parking lot and TSA checkpoint were upgraded, allowing for an additional 424 parking spots and a third TSA checkpoint (which allows for modern screening technology). Although the number of flights passing through decreased in 2021 and 2022, the airport saw record-breaking passenger totals (thus becoming the number 3 airport in Michigan).
Airport location
The airport is located 2.3 miles southeast of the central business district of Traverse City.
