Whiteman Airport
Whiteman Airport, also known as WHP, is a general aviation airport in Los Angeles, California. It can handle both small and medium-sized jets and turboprops and has a control tower that operates daily. There are 600 aircraft at the airport, as well as several aviation-related businesses. It also has an automated weather observing system (AWOS). It has a single runway: 12/30, which is 4,120 x 75 ft (asphalt).
Airport history
In 1946, pilot Marvin Whiteman Sr. started Whiteman Air Park on a farm as a private airport. There was no control tower. In time, the Whiteman Manufacturing Co. was built on the airport's west side. In 1970, the County of Los Angeles purchased the airport. The airport's name was changed to Whiteman Airport in the 1980s.
Airport location
The airport is located in the northeastern San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Pacoima.
Airport facts
- Despite the name change, old-time local pilots still refer to the airport as Whiteman Air Park.
- The airport is home to several flying groups, namely Senior Squadron 35, Cadet Squadron 137, and Los Angeles County Group 1 of the Civil Air Patrol, as well as EAA Chapter 40. A branch of the Young Eagles is also present, and their mission is to provide a meaningful general aviation experience to youth (mainly between the ages of 8 to 17).
- The LA County Fire Department Air Operations Unit is located at Barton Heliport (KPAI) just southeast of the airport.
- There is some controversy surrounding this airport, as some crashes and air pollution concerns have caused some to call for its closure. In contrast, others have resisted because it brings jobs and has a meaningful effect on the community due to the flying clubs.
