Varna Airport
Varna Airport, or VAR to the IATA and LBWN to the ICAO, serves Varna, Golden Sands, and northeastern Bulgaria. It is the third-largest airport in Bulgaria. In 2022 there were 1,484,186 passengers served with 11,420 aircraft movements. There is one runway: 09/27, which is 8,258 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
VAR originated in 1916 as a hydro-port and two sheds in the present-day Chaika residential area. Whereas irregular mail service was initiated between Sofia and Varna between 1919 and 1920, regular commercial service with Sofia was only commenced in 1947. As the initial airport was insufficient for modern aviation, in 1946, the decision was to construct a new airport near the town of Aksakovo, to the west of Varna. In 1972 a new terminal building was completed, and in 1974 a new runway was completed. Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide was awarded a 35-year concession for VAR in 2006, with a commitment of a 500 million euro investment in both Varna and Burgas airports. As such, VAR was closed from October 15th, 2011, to February 28th, 2012, for runway reconstruction (with all flights operating from Burgas Airport). Moreover, the original terminal building was closed in 2013 when a new terminal building was completed.
