San Sebastián Airport

San Sebastián Airport, or EAS to the IATA and LESO to the ICAO, serves San Sebastián in Basque Country, Spain. It is focused primarily on domestic service. In 2018 there were 289,444 passengers served with 6,415 aircraft movements. There is one runway: 04/22, which is 5,755 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

EAS originated in 1920, with initial routes established to Madrid in 1922, the Canary islands in 1924, and Tenerife in 1926. However, the airport was not fully built due to technical and economic difficulties, and its development was halted after it lost its classification as a national airport in December 1931. The plans were revisited in the 1950s as aviation in Spain grew, and the airport was constructed and officially opened on August 29th, 1955. There was one runway (05/23) at 1,200 meters. Scheduled flights by Aviao began almost immediately. As the use of the runway necessitated aircraft flying over French territory, an agreement had to be reached with the French government whereby recreational aircraft flights were not permitted. The runway was extended to 1,500 meters in July 1961, and in May 1963, the airport was classified as a customs airport.
Further development occurred between 1964 and 1965, with the construction of an air traffic control tower and the parking lot extension. Moreover, the airport was officially named San Sebastián Airport. Construction of the terminal building began in 1967 and opened the following year. The runway was extended once again in December 1969 to 1,754 meters. Finally, some of the flight limitations were lifted on March 18th, 1992, with the signing of a new agreement between Spain and France. This allowed for the use of jets, and a maximum daily aircraft movement was established (with no service during nighttime hours.

Airport location

The airport is located in the municipality of Hondarribia.

Airport facts

  •  The runway at EAS stretches like a spit of land along the Bidasoa River on the border with France. Its unique location makes further extension difficult, creating difficult economic conditions for carriers serving the airport and putting the airport's future at risk.
  • Fresh regional cuisine is available at La Pausa, located in the Departures zone.
  • The FBO at EAS is Iberia Handling.
