Valencia Airport
Valencia Airport, also known as Manises Airport or VLC to the IATA and LEVC to the ICAO, is the tenth-busiest Spanish airport (and second in its region after Alicante). It is a hub for Iberia Regional and Vueling. In 2019, over 8.5 million passengers were serviced, with 77,699 aircraft movements. There is one runway: 12/30, which is 10,548 feet (asphalt/concrete).
Airport history
VLC originated in 1927, and it officially opened in 1933. The first flight took place on September 1st, 1934, from Madrid. The first hard-surfaced runway (12/30) and apron were built between 1948 and 1949. In 1953, the first taxiway was built. Both the runway and taxiway were extended in 1958, while a light system was installed as well. The original terminal building, which was built in the mid-1960s, was replaced by a new facility in 1983.
Moreover, in 2007 a new terminal for regional flights was built, along with a private aviation terminal, a vehicle parking terminal, and the extension of the runway, taxiways, and aprons. Furthermore, in 2012 another terminal building was built (like the regional terminal, which was connected to the main terminal), along with a new parking building and a new baggage hall, among others. There was a Ryanair hub at the airport in 2007, but it was short-lived as the base closed after a dispute over subsidies with airport authorities. The base was closed in November 2008, although the airline continues to operate out of VLC as a destination airport. In June 2009, VLC’s first transatlantic flight took place to New York’s JFK via Delta Air Lines. The flight was seasonal, but it was discontinued in 2012 due to rising fuel costs and the flight’s financial performance.
Airport location
