Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport
Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport, or BOD to the IATA and LFBD to the ICAO, is the international airport of Bordeaux in southwestern France. It serves as a base for easyJet, Ryanair, and Volotea Airlines, with destinations to European and North African metropolitan and leisurely destinations, with over 7.7 million passengers served in 2019. There are two runways: 05/23, which is 10,171 feet (asphalt), and 11/29, which is 7,923 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
BOD originated in 1912, as the French government acquired 45 hectares of land and constructed a hangar on site. In the 1930s, the first terminal building was completed. In 1931 management of the airport was designated to the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce for 50 years. During WWII, the KG 40, the primary maritime patrol unit of the German Luftwaffe, was stationed at BOD as part of the Occupation of France. During the 1960s and 70s, significant work was undertaken at the airport, leading to improvements in infrastructure and assistance in navigation and landing.
Moreover, in 1970 over 500,000 passengers were serviced. The early 1970s saw the terminal almost double in size, with new departure halls and 20,000 square meters added. Further expansion occurred in 1986, as the terminal was divided into departure and arrival areas on two floors. The following year a departure lounge for domestic flights (with two jet bridges) opened, bringing the airport’s capacity to 2 million passengers. In 1991 an international departure lounge opened, with two more jet bridges. Work on a new terminal began in 1994, and it opened on June 17th, 1996. This was followed by opening a new air traffic control tower in 2000, along with new boarding areas and a baggage inspection zone. On May 2nd, 2007, Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport SA, a new public limited company, was founded and given operational responsibility for the next 30 years. In 2009 works began on a new terminal (nicknamed the “Billi” terminal) for low-cost carriers, and it opened on June 10th, 2010. By 2014 low-cost carriers made up 40% of BOD’s traffic; the following year, a new arrivals hall at the Billi terminal opened. That year the airport reached 5 million passengers served, reaching 6 million in 2017.
