Lyon–Bron Airport
Lyon–Bron Airport, or LYN to the IATA and LFLY to the ICAO, is an airport is Bron, in the Rhône department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France. It is a general aviation airport operated by the Aéorports de Lyon SA. There is one runway: 16/34, which is 5,971 feet (paved).
Airport history
LYN originated in 1920 with local flights, and in 1924 it became an international airport with service to Geneva, Switzerland. During WWII, the airport was initially part of France's southern, unoccupied zone (Vichy France). At that time, the airport continued offering limited air service, while the GR I/36 of the Vichy French Air Force was also stationed at the base. In 1942 the Allies invaded French North Africa, at which point the airport was taken over by German forces, seizing the military aircraft stationed there. From 1943, the German Luftwaffe used LYN as a radar base to detect Royal Air Force bombers flying over Occupied France at night to targets in Italy. In April 1944, the base was attacked by the United States Army Air Force, sustaining heavy damage.
Furthermore, in August 1944, prisoners from the Montluc prison were taken to Bron in what became known as "The Charnel House of Bron," where 109 prisoners (including 72 Jews) were put to death. Later in the war, following the invasion of Normandy by Allied Forces, the USAAF 50th Fighter Group (utilizing P-47 Thunderbolts) used the airport to support ground forces in Southern France. Moreover, the 121st Liaison Squadron used the airport to support the Sixth Army Group with Cessna UC-78 and Stinson L-5 observation aircraft. American use of the airport culminated in March 1945. Following the conclusion of WWII, LYN became the primary commercial airport for Lyon. A proposal was ultimately rejected for the airport to serve as a USAF air logistics and maintenance depot as part of a NATO commitment to establish a modern airport base at the site. Commercial air traffic moved to the new Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport in 1975, when LYN became a general aviation airport.
