Airport history
MRS originated on October 22nd, 1922, as Marseille-Marignane Airport and was one of France’s main points for flying boats. Some operators were Pan Am World Airways, Aéropostale, and Air Union. Moreover, Marignane was the site for hydroplane production by Lioré et Olivier. In 1934 the airport came under the management of the Marseille-Provence Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which continues to operate MRS to this day. The original passenger terminal building opened in the 1960s and was expanded in 1992. The airport expanded in 2006 with the opening of the new terminal MP2, intended to serve budget airlines. Furthermore, the airport’s shopping and dining options were expanded in 2013, with 30 new shops and restaurants added.
Airport location
The airport is located 17 miles northwest of Marseille.
Airport facts
- MRS was mentioned in the book Wind, Sand, and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, as he is forced to turn his aircraft around and return to the airport due to a fuel leak. This was part of the event that involved his crash-landing in his best-known book, The Little Prince.
- Plans include a terminal expansion and a rearrangement of terminal facilities, bringing airport capacity to 16 million annual passengers.
- The FBOs at MRS are JetEx and Aviapartner.
