Airport history

Nice Cote d’Azur airport was commissioned by the Air Ministry in the late 1920s and was used by the Nice Flying Club. During WWII, it was used by the military and Air Force. Improvements in the airport began in 1944, which was the first time a hard-surface runway was installed. Shortly thereafter, Air France began its Nice-Paris route. By 1950 the airport was servicing 200,000 passengers annually, which shot up to 2 million by 1972. As such, the terminal was expanded several times over the years, and the runway was extended to 2,700 meters or 8,860 feet. In 1978, a second runway was installed using land reclaimed by backfilling the sea. In 1987, a new terminal was built at 300 million FRF.

Airport location

The airport is located 3.7 miles southwest of Nice.

  • The two terminals are linked by tram service, which also connects with the city center and the port.
  • In 2010, the Business Aviation Terminal opened next to Terminal 2, containing the VIP lounges, operations rooms, crew lounges, and the offices of several business aviation companies.
  • 1969 saw an experimental (short-lived) ferry service using two N.300 Naviplane hovercraft connecting Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco, and San-Remo.
