Corfu International Airport
Corfu International Airport "Ioannis Kapodistrias," or CFU to the IATA and LGKR to the ICAO, is a government-owned airport serving the island of Corfu, Greece, with both scheduled and charter flights. Fraport-Greece operates it. In 2020, just under 1 million passengers were served with 10.889 aircraft movements (both drastically lower than the prior year due to COVID-19). There is one runway: 16/34, which is 7,785 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
CFU originated in 1937 and was used by German and Italian forces during WWII as a base for transport and fighter aircraft. At that time, the runway was 600 meters in length. The runway was extended to 800 meters by the end of April 1949, with the first commercial flight from Athens operated by TAE Greek National Airlines. On September 2nd, 1959, HELLAS also began to serve the airport. The runway was again extended to 1,260 meters before the end of 1951, and it was again extended to 2,373 meters, with works finalized in 1959 at the onset of the jet age. A small passenger terminal was completed in 1962 (now used by the Corfu Aeroclub). The airport became international in April 1965, as Olympic Airlines flew the first overseas route. As the airport was growing, a new passenger terminal building was required, with construction commencing in 1968 and the new terminal building opening in 1972. The airport (along with 13 other regional airports) was privatized in December 2015 through a joint venture of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (a state privatization fund) and Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group. As such, the airports will be operated by the joint venture for 40 years starting April 11th, 2017. Once the agreement went into effect, Fraport-Greece set about a general clean-up of the airport, the improvement of the lighting and sanitary facilities, the markings of the airside areas, and ensuring fire-safety standards and offering free WiFi. Moreover, plans included the remodeling and expansion of the current terminal, the construction of a new terminal, a reorganization of the apron area, the installation of a Hold Baggage Inline Screening System, and the increase of departure gates to 12, the increase of check-in desks from 22 to 28, and the reorganization of the security check lanes.
Airport location
The airport is located 1.2 miles south of Corfu Town, and 0.3 miles miles north of Pontikonisi.
