Falcone Borsellino Airport

Falcone Borsellino Airport, also known as Palermo Airport or PMO to the IATA and LICJ to the ICAO, is an international airport serving Palermo, the capital of the island of Sicily, Italy. With just over 7 million passengers served in 2019, it is the second-busiest airport on the island. There are two runways: 07/25, 10,912 feet (asphalt), and 02/20, 6,784 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

PMO originated in the 1920s with Boccadilfalco Airport, the predecessor to the current airport. During WWII, it was heavily used by Allied forces. Following the war, the airport returned to civilian use, and in the 1950s, traffic increased rapidly, which led to the construction and opening of the new airport in 1960. Upon opening, the airport had two runways and basic facilities. Although a passenger terminal had been planned from the onset, it only opened in the early 1990s, as passenger levels exploded. The airport enjoyed transatlantic service from 2005 to 2017 via EuroFly (later known as Meridiana Fly following a merger with Meridiana) to New York via Airbus A330s.

Airport location

The airport is located at Cinisi, 22 miles west-northwest of Palermo.
