Grosseto Airport

Grosseto Airport, or GRS to the IATA and LIRS to the ICAO, is an airport in the central Italian region of Tuscany. It is a joint-use facility, primarily an Italian Air Force base but also used for charters and private aircraft. In 2012 there were 1,732 aircraft movements. There are two runways: 03L/21R, 9,823 by 148 feet (asphalt), and 03R/21L, 7,730 by 79 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

GRS originated during WWII as Grosetta Main, and it was used by the United States Army Air Forces Twelfth Air Force, utilized by the 86th Fighter Group, the 57th Fighter Group, and the 47th Bomb Group. The airport was expanded and modernized during the 1950s to benefit military and civilian aviation. As such, in 1959, the airport became the final seat of the 4th Wing Aerobrigata, and on June 1st, 1961, it became home to the 9th Fighter Group of the Italian Air Force.
