Václav Havel Airport Prague
Václav Havel Airport Prague, or PRG to the IATA and LKPR to the ICAO, is Prague's international airport, the Czech Republic's capital. It is the hub for Czech Airlines and Smartwings and a base for Ryanair and Eurowings. In 2019, there were 17.8 million passengers served and 154,777 aircraft movements. There are two runways: 06/24, which is 12,188 feet (concrete), and 12/30, which is 10,663 feet (concrete).
Airport history
PRG originated on April 5th, 1937, after the original airport serving Czechoslovakia at Kbely (which was in use since 1919) had reached its capacity limits in the mid-1930s. On August 20-21st, 1968, the airport was seized by Soviet paratroopers as part of the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Over the years, ten different entities have been responsible for the administration of the airport. Modernization of the airport only began in the 1990s. On October 5th, 2012, the airport was renamed in honor of Václav Havel, the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic. From 2012 to 2013, the main runway (06/24) was reconstructed due to poor conditions.
Airport location
The airport is located at the edge of the Prague-Ruzyně area, next to Kněževes village, seven miles west of the center of Prague and seven miles southeast of the city of Klavno.
