Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, also known as Porto Airport or OPO to the IATA and LPPR to the ICAO, is an international airport serving Porto, Portugal. It is a hub for easyJet and Ryanair and a focus city for TAP Air Portugal and its subsidiary, TAP Express. In 2019 there were 13.1 million passengers served with 96,537 aircraft movements. There is one runway: 17/35, 11,417 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

OPO originated in 1945, originally named Pedras Rubras Airport (after the locality where it is located). It was built on agricultural land, known for its rich soil. In 1990 it was renamed in honor of former Portuguese prime minister Francisco de Sá Carneiro, who died in a plane crash on December 4th, 1980, while traveling to the airport. On December 18th, 1998, the airport came under the management of ANA Aeroportos de Portugal and became responsible for future planning and development at OPO. In 2006 a new passenger terminal building debuted, designed by Portuguese firm ICQ.

Airport location

The airport is located in the municipalities of Maia, Matosinhos, and Vila do Conde, 6.8 miles northwest of the Clérigos Tower in the center of Porto.
