Tivat Airport

Tivat Airport, or TIV to the IATA and LYTV to the ICAO, is an international airport serving the Montenegrin coastal town of Tivat and the surrounding area. It is the busiest airport in Montenegro and is highly seasonal: 80% of passengers are served between May and September. There is one runway: 14/32, which is 8,202 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

TIV originated on May 30th, 1957, with a terminal building (with a control tower), a 1,200-meter-long grass runway, and a small apron. Until 1968, traffic at the airport was primarily domestic, with flights to Belgrade, Zagreb, and Skopje (all part of Yugoslavia at the time). The airport was expanded and modernized from 1968 to 1971, reopening on September 25th with a new passenger terminal, a new control tower, a 2,500-meter-long asphalt runway, a larger apron, and new taxiways. In 1979 an earthquake struck, necessitating a refurbishment. Moreover, the taxiways were widened, and the apron was enlarged, allowing TIV to service wide-body aircraft. The ownership of TIV was transferred to the public company “Airports of Montenegro” on April 23rd, 2003, which the government of Montenegro owned. The terminal underwent a modernization and reconstruction project, reopening on June 3rd, 2006. The following year, new equipment was purchased following a $1 million donation from the government of South Korea. In 2008 several older types of passenger aircraft were banned from flying to TIV due to noise abatement. By the mid-2010s, passengers serviced approached one million annually, and the terminal became overcrowded. As such, in December 2018, the new Terminal 2 was opened.

Airport location

The airport is located 1.9 miles south of the center of Tivat.
