Providenciales International Airport
Providenciales International Airport, or PLS, is the leading international airport serving the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. There are hubs for both interCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways, which are local carriers. International airlines currently serving the airport include American Airlines, Delta, United, JetBlue, Air Canada, West Jet, and British Airways. There are over 12,000 commercial aircraft operations per year, and there is one runway: 10/28, which is 9,209 by 148 feet (asphalt).
Airport history
In 1966 Fritz Ludington formed Provident Limited and made a lease-purchase agreement with the Turks and Caicos government on a 4,000-acre plot on the eastern part of Provinciales. There was an airstrip that was essentially hand-made in an area of cleared bush, so in 1967 when heavy equipment arrived, the first priority was to improve the airstrip. While doing so, it became apparent that a better location for a longer runway would be half-a-mile to the south, where there was a more flat surface. Originally 6,000 feet were cleared for the runway, and by the early 1970s, the entire runway had been built out with a coral surface (in 1977, it was surfaced with a seal coat). Starting in 1981, the entire airport received a makeover (to bring it up to FAA standards), and the runway was extended to 8,000 feet, with the limestone base reinforced with concrete and the runway receiving triple-seal coat protection. A new terminal was also built. In the 1990s, the runway was resurfaced with asphalt, and in 2011 it was extended to 9,200 feet. A new terminal was completed in 2014 at the cost of $10 million.
Airport location
The airport is located on the island of Providenciales in the Caicos Islands.
