King Fahd International Airport

King Fahd International Airport, also known as Dammam International Airport or DMM to the IATA and OEDF to the ICAO, is the international airport serving Dammam and the entire Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Operated and managed by the Dammam Airports Company, it is a hub for Saudia and Flynas. The third-busiest airport in the country, in 2016, it served 9.6 million passengers with 90,134 aircraft movements. There are two runways: 16R/34L, which is 13,123 feet (asphalt); and 16L/34R, which is 13,123 feet (asphalt).

Airport history

DMM originated in 1976, as designs for the airport were initiated. Construction began in 1983, with the basic infrastructure completed in 1990. The timing allowed for the use of the airport by US military forces during the Gulf War in 1991. As such, the airport was used to store military aircraft, including A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, AH-64 Apaches, and CH-47 Chinooks. Civilian use of the airport began on November 28th, 1999, after the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia inaugurated the airport. Then, all airlines were relocated to the airport from Dhahran International Airport (which became a military airport, designated King Abdulaziz Air Base).

Airport location

The airport is located 19 miles northwest of downtown Dammam.

Airport facts

  • Despite being the third-busiest airport in Saudi Arabia, DMM is by far the largest airport in the world by land area, over three times the size of the third-largest airport, Dallas/Fort Worth. This is due, in part, to its 177,000-square-foot royal terminal.
  • Saudi Aramco Aviation (the airline operated by Saudi oil giant Saudi Aramco) utilizes DMM to transport its employees to strategic locations.
  • The airport comprises three terminals: one for passengers, one for Aramco employees, and one for the Saudi Royal family.
  • The FBOs at DMM are Saudi Private Aviation and Future Flight Support.
