Perugia

The historic city of Perugia resides on a hilltop and was the center of the Rennaissance Umbrian School of painting. Works by its masters, Perugino, Pinturicchio, and Raphael, can be found in churches and government buildings throughout the city. Many other works can be found in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in the Palazzo dei Priori. The 13th century Fontana Maggiore is considered one of the most spectacular fountains of the period, while the Arco d'Augusto dates back to Etruscan times (pre Rome) in the 3rd century BC, and it is named for Augustus Caesar, who managed to conquer the city and bring it under the Roman Empire.
