Sofia

The capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, lies below Vitosha Mountain (the site of a nature park and ski resort). The city has seen many occupations over the years, including the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Ottomans, and the Soviet Union. These influences are reflected in the local architecture. Highlights include the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral, built to commemorate those who lost their lives defeating the Ottomans, Vitosha Boulevard, which is the street for upscale shopping, the medieval Boyana Church (known for its beautiful frescoes), and a variety of stunning theaters and museums.
