Verona

Verona, in northern Italy on the River Adige, is known for its medieval old town and for being the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. However, the city has its origins in Roman times, as evidenced by the amphitheater, which is well preserved and still hosts events such as the Verona Opera Festival. The Castelvecchio and Ponte Scaligero are a castle and bridge built by the Scaligeri in the 1300s as a show of power, while the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is considered the finest Romanesque building all northern Italy. Another significant and picturesque square is the Piazza Delle Erbe, while the Piazza dei Signori features a monument to Dante while being surrounded by palaces.
